01Freeze the sample and call setup
Record left and right earbud identifiers, firmware, phone model, operating-system version, app version and whether one or both earbuds are worn. Note the network type for live calls. This prevents a later phone update, app setting or replacement sample from being mistaken for a microphone change.
02Use a fixed voice reference
Have the same speaker read a short phrase at a normal level while standing in the same position. Keep head angle and hair or clothing away from the microphone openings. If several speakers participate, log them separately; voice pitch and speaking style can alter the result.
03Start with a quiet baseline
Run one local voice recording and one live call in a quiet room. Listen for missing syllables, harsh consonants, sudden gain changes, left-right switching, metallic artifacts and dropouts. The baseline shows whether later trouble comes from added noise or already exists in the clean condition.
04Add controlled everyday noise
Replay the same café or traffic recording from a fixed speaker position and marked volume. Repeat with a fan producing light airflow from the front and side. Record the setup rather than calling it a laboratory noise level. Score whether words stay understandable and whether suppression pumps or clips the voice.
05Separate device behavior from the network
A local recording removes the cellular or internet connection, while a live call includes phone, app, codec and network behavior. If the local file is clean but the call is poor, repeat on another app or connection before rejecting the sample. Bluetooth HFP describes the phone-to-hands-free voice connection; it does not control the full network path.
06Score what a listener can hear
Use a short scale for intelligibility, voice level, background intrusion, clipping, pumping and dropouts. Ask the listener to write the words they missed instead of only choosing good or bad. Store representative audio files with neutral names and permission from every recorded participant.
07Turn failures into acceptance checks
Describe each failure with setup, timestamp and affected side. Agree which cases must pass on the approved sample and how production units will be spot-checked. Do not turn one successful call into a universal clear-call claim across all phones, apps, users and environments.
