01Define scope and trigger
State whether review covers a new product, new supplier, new site, new line, new or repaired tool, design revision, material change, process change or restart after interruption. Define the exact item and package levels included. Do not borrow an earlier first-article result when the changed condition could affect a reviewed characteristic.
02Confirm production-route authenticity
Record site, line, work center, tool and cavity where relevant, equipment, operators or roles, shift, date and process route. Verify the unit followed normal material preparation, assembly, software loading, inspection and packing steps. A manually polished engineering sample may look better but cannot prove readiness of the intended production process.
03Freeze requirements and trace inputs
List purchase order, SKU, model, revision, drawings, specification, bill of materials, approved sample, artwork, work instruction and inspection-plan versions. Record relevant material and component lots plus approved deviations. Resolve conflicting files before measurement; inspectors should not choose whichever requirement makes the unit pass.
04Plan characteristic coverage
Create a row for every characteristic selected for first-article review: identity, dimensions, appearance, assembly, function, interface, software, accessories, labels, barcode, package and other product-specific items. Name requirement, method, instrument, condition and result format. Send safety or regulated tests to qualified facilities rather than improvising them on the line.
05Record actual results and evidence
Enter measured values, observed state, units, instrument identity, environment where relevant, photos and inspector. Preserve raw records and note measurement uncertainty or method limitations when they matter. A checked box without the actual result is weak evidence for a numeric feature and makes later drift difficult to diagnose.
06Control deviations and release
Classify every gap, identify affected requirement and decide correction, concession, repeat build or hold through named authority. Confirm that rework does not hide the original process problem. A conditional release must state permitted quantity and work, open actions and expiry; it should not become an informal approval for full production.
07Link reinspection to change
After correction, verify the affected characteristic and any linked features. Define which changes require complete or partial first-article repetition. Keep superseded results with product and process history. Monitor early production after release because one conforming unit does not establish long-term capability or guarantee every later lot.
